To foster collaboration between their divisions, the City of Lenexa set out to construct a modern and state-of-the-art Justice Center that combines the Lenexa Police Department and Municipal Court into one building. Working closely with the architect and the City, Henderson Engineers provided building system design and energy modeling services while Henderson Building Solutions provided commissioning services. Henderson Building Solutions performed Black Site Testing to confirm all electrical systems were up and operational in the event of a power grid outage.
The new Justice Center complex includes a police training facility, 911 dispatch center and outreach facilities for mental co-responders, and quiet rooms that provide a space for police officers and mental health co-responders to decompress after overwhelming events. It was important to the City to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for not only the staff, but also all visitors so our team used architectural lighting design to brighten many areas of the complex such as the lobby, courtroom, a community room, and staff common area. Warm lighting was placed in a separate safe space for victims to meet with detectives.
In addition, Henderson Engineers also provided additional electric vehicle electrical infrastructure designs for the parking lot as well as telecom and security designs for the complex. Built to serve the community, the Lenexa Justice Center will support the well-being of the staff and city residents for years to come.
