Laboratory Relocation & Expansion - Quintiles Genomics

Henderson Engineers renovated 35,000 SF of empty tenant space to become a new Genomics Laboratory facility for Quintiles. The facility includes accessioning, a large PCR suite, cell culture suite, RNA Isolation lab, DNA Isolation lab, laboratory support areas, walk in cold rooms and freezers, ultra-low temperature freezer room, inventory room, offices, and break room. The HVAC systems include a new, variable volume, 100% outside air supply unit, laboratory airflow control system, and high plume induction laboratory exhaust fans. New, high-efficiency boilers provide heat. Due to extensive use of CO2 and liquid nitrogen, an oxygen depletion alarm and purge exhaust system were included.

The office is served by a VAV heating and cooling unit and a dedicated outdoor air unit with heat recovery using a demand controlled ventilation strategy.

Plumbing systems include Type II purified water, hot and cold domestic and laboratory water, tempered water for emergency eyewashes and showers, and domestic water booster pump.

The electrical design included power distribution for convenience and laboratory equipment. Electrical distribution to the lab benches was designed to allow for flexibility and future adaptability. Two-channel raceway was used for power and data distribution on perimeter benches and ceiling utility panels with prewired benches were used for islands. The entire suite is backed up on a 300 KW generator.

The laboratories were lit using pendant hung direct/indirect fluorescent fixtures. This helped achieve good lighting levels and uniformity with lower energy consumption.
