VITAL Climbing

Founded by two best friends, VITAL Climbing Gym inspires to be a place of inclusively, connection, well-being, and so much more. This is not your ordinary climbing gym. At VITAL, you will find humans who strive to make positive impacts on the world through relationships and by taking actionable steps to protect our environment. This includes setting goals like being carbon neutral in all locations by the end of 2021. Sounds pretty awesome to us, so you can imagine how excited we were when they selected Henderson Engineers to partner with on their systems’ design for a ground up facility in Brooklyn, New York.

We faced a unique technical challenge that is well known in the climbing gym world. Dust from the chalk is a common problem not only for the owner and the building's systems, but the end-user as well. True to VITAL’s mission, they wanted something better than the traditional “Chalk Eater” solution for their members.

Our team collaborated with the project teams by hosting roundtable discussions throughout the design process to develop an integrated filtration system that was not only effective but worked seamlessly with the elements of the space. To top it all off, our team incorporated food service elements so members could enjoy some much needed sustenance after all that hard work; all the while enjoying those famous New York City skyline views from the rooftop.
