Raymore-Peculiar East Middle School is the first in Missouri to make environmental literacy and responsibility part of its core curriculum and Henderson Engineers is proud to have been a partner in the design of this pioneering LEED Gold certified school. We worked in close conjunction with the district to provide a technology infrastructure to support educational curriculum of the school as a teaching tool. To encourage student interaction and awareness, the school’s energy consumption data is collected from the building automation system and displayed in the student commons areas.

We believe smart resource allocation and sustainability measures should shape design decisions so we incorporated geothermal heat pumps in the design of this two-story building drawing heat from the earth to warm the school. Other unique green elements included geothermal heat pumps for kitchen walk-in cooler/freezers, domestic hot water service, demand control ventilation for enhanced energy savings, and low flow fixtures, auto-sensor faucets, and flush valves for water efficiency measures. Due to the remote location of the site, the school’s fire and life safety system was designed to receive water from a storm water detention pond.
