Birkenstock is a brand with a centuries-long history in creating fine crafted, premium quality shoes; and in October 2018, they opened their first U.S. storefront, their new flagship store in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City. Everything from the location to the design to the project team was taken under serious consideration to ensure this new space embodied their rich history as well as their commitment to comfort and quality, while also revitalizing the established product for an expanded market.

Henderson was a key partner in the building systems designs within the landmark New York building. To allow Birkenstock to occupy all three floors, the design team had to overcome some unique challenges. The scope of the project included a new energy efficient HVAC system, upgraded electrical service to bring the renovated space into compliance with the latest electrical and energy code requirements, and creative solutions to help save costs in the plumbing design. By proactively relocating a water fountain from the basement, the team avoided the need for new vent lines. The trust our team built while bringing Birkenstock’s flagship store to life helped lay the groundwork for a continued partnership on additional storefronts in the U.S., which are slated to open in 2019.
