Seaton Hall School of Architecture, Planning, & Design - Kansas State University

The Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design ranks nationally among public institutions and is number one for interior architecture and number two for landscape architecture. The APDesign program had been housed in the historic Seaton complex and needed extensive renovation to create a 21st-century learning and research facility. To that end, a portion of Seaton East was demolished, the remaining section renovated, and an expansion added to adjoin Regnier Hall (formerly Mechanics Hall), which was also reconditioned. The new addition doubled the APDesign space and includes a courtyard and common area affectionately called The Jewel.

Henderson Engineers was happy to partner again with this long-time collegiate client. Our new mechanical systems were designed to be highly efficient and included: replacing all air handlers, exhaust fans and ductwork; installing new DDC controls, LED fixtures, and occupancy sensors; and upgrading the main electrical service. A new generator was included to back up critical loads. Ventilation was provided from a dedicated outside air system with dual heat recovery wheels and an occupancy-based, demand control strategy. Lighting features active daylighting controls to reduce energy consumption while providing seamless uniformity.

Henderson was proud to partner with KSU on this behind-the-scenes infrastructure project. We hope it ensures the school’s APDesign program continues to shine nationally as it prepares young architects to excel in their chosen fields.
