When the former Quality Hill mansion was being transformed into a learning environment for future scholars, Crossroads Charter Schools knew they could trust Henderson Engineers to stay true their vision of being a premier charter school system in Kansas City. The historic renovation converted the 19th century dwelling to be a 21st century home to classrooms, multipurpose rooms and gymnasium, individual study spaces, and collaborative learning areas.
Coordinating the reuse of as much of the building’s existing systems as possible with the design of new systems for increased efficiency was important to not only the owner, but to our design team as well. A new fan coil unit (FCU) was used to support the additional space loads with the building’s increased occupancy while reusing as much of the existing chilled water fan coils. To supplement natural ventilation from the existing operable windows, a dedicated outdoor air unit (DOAS) was used for mechanical ventilation. A new voice evacuation fire alarm system was provided in addition to modification to the fire sprinkler system to accommodate the reconfigured spaces. Henderson also provided the design for the school’s telecommunication system including cabling and pathway design to support their new network devices, wireless access points, and phones. Crossroads Academy serves as an inspiration to all who use their spaces to build a better tomorrow. We are proud to have helped design the building systems where these inspirations take place.
