Health Services Building - Johnson County

The Health Services Building in Olathe aims to serve as a model for modern, comprehensive public health services. The facility brings multiple county facilities together under one roof, including Johnson County Mental Health Center, Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, and Johnson County Aging and Human Services. The integrated design reflects a holistic approach to patient care, aligning with the principles of Public Health 3.0, which emphasizes the importance of addressing physical, mental, and emotional determinants of health.

Henderson Engineers' sustainable and regenerative design approach for the project includes a water reclamation system with the potential to reclaim two million gallons of water a year and renewable energy in over 43,000 SF of rooftop solar panels. Henderson designed multiple systems with operational efficiency in mind, including chilled water with air cooled chillers, heating water with electric boilers, energy recovery units for dedicated outside air, fan coil units for space temperature control, LED lighting, lighting control system, low flow and ultra-low flow plumbing fixtures, and a generator for emergency power.

The design goal is to provide infrastructure to make the building net zero carbon ready and a target to achieve LEED Certification. With slated completion in the fall of 2027, the new facility will include private consultation spaces, multi-purpose rooms to support group therapy and community health events, increased daylight and connection to nature, and welcoming features that promote long-term wellbeing, comfort, and reduce environmental impacts.
