Henderson Engineers Welcomes J.D. Stephney to its Phoenix Office

Henderson Engineers announces J.D. Stephney, PE, LEED AP as a new associate and project manager in the firm’s Phoenix office. He brings nearly 20 years of experience to his new role in the desert. Stephney spent the last decade at Burns & McDonnell in Kansas City, where he was an associate and senior mechanical engineer. He will focus on infrastructure replacement in healthcare, higher education, and mission critical for Henderson Building Solutions, a construction management and commissioning subsidiary of Henderson Engineers.

“J.D. is an excellent addition to our Henderson office in Phoenix as his portfolio is diverse and experienced,” said Marcus Sanchez, director of operations for Henderson’s Phoenix office. “His global experience and expertise takes our operations to another level, and we’re thrilled to add him to the Henderson leadership group as he will serve as a valuable mentor to our staff. We are very excited to have the Henderson Building Solutions presence in Phoenix.”

Stephney has extensive experience across multiple vertical markets, including healthcare, higher education, corporate workplace, and venues. His experience covers projects from start to finish, including design, coordination with consultants and code officials, construction documentation, and construction administration.

“I’m excited to join a thriving firm such as Henderson with our growing presence in Phoenix and the southwest region,” Stephney said. “I will primarily be focused on growing and supporting Henderson’s healthcare portfolio through leadership on healthcare infrastructure design-build projects. My understanding of the construction management side in addition to my background as an engineer give me a unique perspective on projects. I’m pleased to join such a strong team and excited to see what we can accomplish together.”

While at Burns & McDonnell, Stephney worked on multiple complex building system designs for The University of Kansas Hospital, Saint Luke’s Hospital, and Truman Medical Center. He also has experience with sports complexes and higher education facilities. Stephney spent three months in Saudi Arabia completing the design of a hospital for the Ministry of Health and has also completed work at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Stephney began his career in 2000 as a mechanical engineer for Newcomb and Boyd in Atlanta, where he engineered projects for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Emory University, Carolinas Medical Center, and Georgia Tech.

He is a licensed mechanical Professional Engineer in Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Stephney also is a LEED accredited professional (AP), Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP), and certified member of the Professional Council of Examiners for Engineering & Surveying (NCEES).

Away from the office, Stephney has served as a board member for Jackson County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and Kansas City Area Healthcare Engineers (KCAHE), where he was the meetings and programs committee chair. He is also active with the United Way and was previously a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Atlanta.

Stephney graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering. During his college career, he earned Academic All-American honors in football.
