Team Henderson’s Thoughts and Insights from 2024 NAB Show

Team Henderson recently attended the 2024 NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show. The event brings together industry professionals to discuss key trends and topics driving change across the content economy. Kevin Butler, venue sector low voltage practice manager, Jason Kartak, senior audio-video consultant, and Dan Keller, audio-video technical manager, returned with the following insights:

Software GUI

Software enhancements continue to be a center point at NAB, with cloud-based workflows continuing to gain traction and the complexity of system operation requiring simplified interfaces to improve operator success.

GUI interfaces highlighted by many manufacturers showed dramatically improved visual controls and operational workflows that emulate similar layouts and functions we have grown accustomed to on modern-day smartphones. These advancements have reduced tactile interfaces in the industry and pushed operations into a touch-interactive environment. This radical shift in the industry has been needed to meet the changing dynamics of younger generations and how they interact with technology.

This advancement in GUI interfaces and how it impacts operation workflows will be key to watch over the next few years. We will see how these advancements impact physical tactile controls and how the industry shifts in bridging the gap with how future generations interface with broadcast technology.

Continued Adoption of Cloud-Based Workflow

Improvements continue to be made to reduce barriers of offsite workflows. Acceptance of this workflow occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, but new opportunities are being realized. Whether pushing audio across the country or clipping replays from your house, the reduction of staff sitting with views to the bowl seems evident. This will impact future designs as premium product offerings provide a revenue priority over production spaces.

Camera Control

This year saw significant advancements in automated camera control, particularly within the realms of artificial intelligence and robotics. These developments have facilitated a greater range of options for robotically controlling cameras, even in challenging conditions, thereby enhancing flexibility and the quality of the results achieved. Moreover, the increased flexibility in camera locations has emerged as a notable benefit, enabling more diverse and creative shooting setups. Furthermore, these advancements have led to a reduction in the reliance on manned cameras for productions, as automation takes on more responsibilities.

The ability of automation to deliver repeatable shots has become a valuable asset, promising to enhance the overall fan experience by ensuring consistency in viewing angles and perspectives. Notably, algorithms continue to make strides in automatically tracking people and objects, building upon past efforts, and continually refining their capabilities for greater accuracy and efficiency.

What It All Means

The 2024 NAB Show shed light on the evolving landscape of broadcast technology and its impact on production workflows. The focus on software GUI enhancements underscores a concerted effort within the industry to streamline operations and cater to the preferences of a tech-savvy generation. The transition towards touch-interactive interfaces reflects a necessary adaptation to meet the changing dynamics of user interaction.

The continued adoption of cloud-based workflows signifies a transformative shift in how content is produced and distributed, with implications for future design priorities and revenue streams. Equally significant are the strides made in automated camera control, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics, which promise heightened flexibility, quality, and consistency in production outcomes. As these trends continue to unfold, it’s evident that the broadcast industry is poised for further innovation and adaptation to meet the demands of an ever-evolving digital landscape.
