Fire & Smoke Dampers in Healthcare Facilities

COURSE OVERVIEW

Fire and smoke dampers present a challenge during design of each facility and are often over or under designed. This course intends to help attendees understand where and why dampers are required based on applicable building, fire, and life safety codes, as well as which type of damper to design/install at each location. The course will also explore when multiple applicable codes are present with conflicting and/or duplicative criteria and how to navigate to the correct answer. Lastly this presentation will review field coordination challenges with dampers and how to make sure the initial installation with proper coordination can help the owner maintain these devices for the life of the facility.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Identify types of dampers in a facility.
  2. Discuss types of fire and smoke rated assemblies.
  3. Apply successful solutions when NFPA requirements apply.
  4. Navigate field coordination challenges when installing dampers.
