Phoenix Central Station Redevelopment
What if a transportation hub could become more than a place to catch a bus or train? The redevelopment of Phoenix Central Station reimagines a key downtown destination as a connected, walkable, mixed-use space where people can live, shop, dine, and access public transportation within steps of of their home.
As a part of Phoenix’s broader vision for downtown growth, the projects helps concentrate housing and amenities around existing light rail and bus infrastructure. The goal was to create an urban environment designed to make everyday destinations more accessible while encouraging public transit use and creating a more connected downtown. Making that vision possible required navigating an unusually complex site. Active light rail tracks border the property on both the east and west sides, creating significant constraints for bringing new utilities onto the site. Henderson Engineers worked closely with the architect, civil consultant, and utility providers to coordinate utility services and develop solutions that could work within the limited access.
Our team also addressed challenges related to shallow municipal sewer mains and restricted site access. Henderson engineers evaluated lift station locations and pressurized sewer routing alternatives to develop an approach that met City of Phoenix's requirements while keeping the project moving forward. Throughout the project, building systems were adapted to accommodate evolving residential layouts, program requirements, and owner priorities.
The redevelopment also supports efficient building operations while reducing the need for individual cooling infrastructure. We focused efforts on optimizing the building systems for efficient, reliable performance within the constraints of the site.
