Morton Amphitheater – Live Nation
Live Nation's Morton Amphitheater is Kansas City's newest concert venue designed for the ultimate live entertainment experience. The 16,000-seat outdoor amphitheater combines covered fixed seating and open lawn seating with artist spaces, VIP amenities, and full food and beverage service throughout the venue.
Henderson Engineers provided multidisciplinary engineering services to help bring the new concert venue to life. With the needs of artists, guests, and facility operators in mind, our team designed the behind-the-scenes systems that balance comfort and functionality in order to keep this large-scale entertainment venue running smoothly.
For Live Nation, the new venue provides greater control over the guest experience and day-to-day operations from the systems behind the scenes to the amenities guests see and use. That balance is at the heart of successful venue design. Henderson brought expertise across multiple engineering disciplines to coordinate the systems required to support a high-capacity concert venue while staying focused on the experience those systems ultimately support.
This project was unique in that it brought together a wide range of systems, consultants, and specialty teams, within tight physical and budgetary constraints. At Morton Amphitheater, we were able to coordinate with specialty lighting vendors, Live Nation’s internal low-voltage team, AV and IT teams, contractors, and other consultants to keep the project moving forward. The team took a proactive approach to coordination, requesting preliminary design information from other consultants to identify potential conflicts early and incorporate their work into our plans. When construction revealed that conduit in the overhead canopy needed to remain concealed within the joists, Henderson worked alongside the AV, IT, and electrical teams to develop a coordinated solution that maintained the intended design.
The project required flexibility throughout design and construction, particularly as specialty design packages arrived at different times. By staying engaged with the broader project team and adapting quickly, Team Henderson helped keep the project on track and meet critical deadlines.
A successful concert venue is about more than what the audience sees. It depends on systems that support spaces for artists, reliable operations for venue staff, and an experience that keeps fans coming back. At Morton Amphitheater, Henderson Engineers helped create the foundation to support all three. The project demonstrates how experienced venue engineers can bring diverse disciplines together, solve challenges in real time, and keep the focus on what matters most: creating places where people want to gather, connect and experience live events.
