Henderson Engineers Announces Fire & Life Safety Leadership Transition

Henderson Engineers announces Chris Culp as the new director of fire and life safety. Culp succeeds Darrell Stein, who previously held the role since 2001 and was recently given additional leadership responsibilities for Henderson. Culp takes the lead for one of the largest fire protection groups in the country.

“Stepping forward into this role was a natural transition for Chris as he has been a leader within our fire and life safety group for nearly 20 years,” said Rich Smith, president and CEO of Henderson Engineers. “Darrell, along with tremendous help from Chris, successfully led this group for more than 18 years, and we’re excited to elevate both individuals with added responsibilities.”

Culp now directs Henderson’s fire and life safety roster of more than 50 team members nationwide. The full-service team provides technical expertise to clients across all vertical markets that Henderson serves. The fire and life safety group works side-by-side with building systems engineers at Henderson as well as construction management and commissioning experts at Henderson Building Solutions – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Henderson Engineers – to ensure clients have seamless, one-stop service.

“I’m honored and excited for this opportunity to lead such a talented group of fire protection professionals with diverse backgrounds and specialties,” Culp said. “I’d like to thank our leadership for having the confidence in me to take on this new role, and I especially thank Darrell for the mentoring, vision, and friendship he has provided me for many years.”

Henderson’s fire protection engineers know design, life safety technology, and construction. The group specializes in full-scale fire testing, fire alarm design, water supply analysis, forensics, fire sprinkler and standpipe design, code consulting, fire pumps, water storage tanks, clean agent systems, commodity classification, hazardous materials and high-piled storage analysis, mass notification systems design, and smoke control analysis and design.

Stein’s new role provides leadership oversight of three business units, which includes the fire and life safety group and design teams focused on healthcare, retail, grocery, and entertainment. His new responsibilities include working with team leaders on all aspects of operations, including financial, strategic, and personnel. Stein functions as an advocate for and liaison between the board of directors and teams.

“I’m excited to be able to pass the torch to Chris and can’t wait to see what our fire and life safety group achieves under his leadership,” Stein noted. “I’m proud to take on this new challenge working with our talented leaders in each respective area and continuing valued relationships with our devoted clients.”

Since joining Henderson, Culp has specialized in water-based suppression, commodity classification, fire modeling, fire alarm systems, structural fire protection, fire pump and water storage tanks, and code review and analysis. He earned his Professional Engineer licensure for fire protection in 1997.

Prior to his tenure at Henderson, Culp began his career as a mechanical and controls engineer for nuclear, combined cycle, and coal-fired power plant designs. He graduated with bachelor’s degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Missouri, where he was a member of the prestigious Honors Scholar Program.
