WAXAHACHIE, Texas — Henderson Engineers, a national building systems design firm, has completed a new six-floor inpatient tower at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Waxahachie in the Dallas exurb of Waxahachie, Texas. The project represents the largest phase of an ongoing $240 million expansion of the 52-acre healthcare campus, which opened in 2014.
Henderson Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire and life safety design services for the transformational project, which increases the center’s licensed bed capacity from 140 to 199. The new tower features an intensive care unit, surgery department, larger emergency department, and multilevel parking.
“North Texas has one of the fastest growing populations in the country, creating additional demand for high-quality health services,” said Laura Longoria, Henderson’s health sector practice director and Dallas office leader. “Henderson is honored to have played a role in ensuring Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Waxahachie has the capacity needed to effectively serve the region, providing local residents with access to specialized healthcare services without having to travel far from home. This project exemplifies the type of forward-thinking investment needed to support the long-term well-being of our communities.”
Construction of the new tower began in April 2024 and was completed while the medical center remained fully occupied, requiring a high level of coordination between the design and construction team. Key partners included HKS as architect and Whiting-Turner as general contractor.
“A multiphase project of this scale requires navigating multiple bid packages, managing phased construction documents, and carefully aligning new equipment and systems with the existing facility. Successfully orchestrating all of these moving parts is a delicate balance,” said Liz Greer, Henderson’s health practice manager. “At the same time, medical centers operate 24/7 so every shutdown and system transition required careful planning and coordination to ensure patient care and hospital operations remained uninterrupted.”
The next stage of the expansion will include interior renovations to the preoperative and post-anesthesia care unit, materials management department, and pharmacy. Henderson Engineers is also providing building systems design services for that phase.
