COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is an introduction to solar photovoltaic (PV) systems design and coordination for architects and architectural designers in commercial construction projects. In this course, attendees will review solar module (panel) types, racking/mounting types, inverter purpose and common variations, as well as the industry standard application of each. High level solar PV energy production calculations will be reviewed, with associated capital costs and financial performance metrics. Finally, the course will conclude with a review of common design coordination activities for architects to be aware of, for the architectural discipline, as well as traditional commercial construction team-members.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Attendees will understand the major components associated with solar PV systems and their purpose.
  2. Attendees will understand the most common applications for solar PV in commercial construction projects.
  3. Attendees will understand common financial performance metrics associated with evaluating solar PV, including incentives.
  4. Attendees will come away with an understanding of the top design-phase coordination activities for solar PV projects, broken down by discipline among typical commercial construction project design disciplines.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE

• Attendees should understand that solar PV systems can generate clean renewable energy.
• Attendees need experience working with or have awareness of design-phase commercial construction project team members.
• Attendees should be familiar with electricity bills or systems that use electricity in commercial buildings.
