Design Considerations for All Gender Restrooms

COURSE OVERVIEW

The industry’s focus and push towards inclusive design and full gender neutrality in restrooms is welcome across all industries, even large public assembly spaces and venues with significant restroom capacity requirements. This presentation will make the case that even high occupancy buildings can successfully implement gender neutral design strategies. The focus will be on fixture count impacts (including impacts on infrastructure given reliance on higher flow fixtures), flexible design strategies, MEP and fire protection design impacts and device placement understanding, and options for providing visibility to the public and occupants about available capacity and vacancies.

1. Understand general design/flexibility considerations for all gender restrooms in large capacity buildings.
2. Understand impacts of full height stall construction on MEP and fire protection design and device/accessory placement.
3. Understand impacts of gender neutrality approach on plumbing fixture counts and piping infrastructure.
4. Think through options for monitoring/scheduling and public awareness of capacities for all gender restrooms.
