LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Understand the various occupancy types present in healthcare and the implications occupancy has on design and construction.
2. Understand why smoke compartmentation is needed in healthcare occupancies and the requirements for smoke compartments.
3. Define each type of fire rated construction, understand where each type is required, and the requirements for each type.
4. Understand the testing requirements for life safety systems present in healthcare occupancies.
5. Identify how to address potentially conflicting requirements in the Life Safety Code and other applicable building codes.
6. Understand common code interpretations by accrediting organizations.
7. Identify documentation needed for a successful survey by an accrediting organization.
8. Understanding the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, CMS, and their involvement and oversight in the construction and operation of healthcare facilities.
