Acoustics in the Built Environment
COURSE OVERVIEW
Sound and vibration are often overlooked in the design process, yet they shape how people experience every space. This session will assess the fundamentals of acoustics and psychoacoustics, highlight common misconceptions, and explain core sound issues that affect building performance. The session will raise awareness of when standard solutions are sufficient and when a project may benefit from specialized acoustic expertise, equipping designers to ask better questions and recognize key decision points.LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Describe how human perception of sound (psychoacoustics) influences the quality and comfort of interior environments.
- Summarize the basic principles of sound transmission, reflection, and absorption as they relate to building design.
- Identify the most common acoustic challenges in buildings, including isolation, mechanical noise, and reverberation.
- Appreciate the value of intentional acoustic design as more than just noise reduction, but as an integral part of occupant well-being and project success.
