COURSE OVERVIEW

This session equips architects with practical knowledge of acoustic design in healthcare environments. Participants will learn how sound control affects patient safety, speech privacy, and staff effectiveness; understand key acoustic metrics and design strategies; and apply healthcare acoustic guidelines early in the design process to support health, safety, and welfare outcomes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Evaluate design decisions that may unintentionally compromise acoustic privacy and speech intelligibility.
  2. Collaborate effectively with acoustical consultants using shared terminology and performance goals.
  3. Identify primary noise sources and sound transmission paths within clinical environments.
  4. Recognize commonly used acoustic performance metrics (e.g., NC/RC, STC, NIC, reverberation time) and their relevance to clinical spaces.
