Henderson Engineers Welcomes Industry Veteran Barry Sutherland to Lead Client Relations

LENEXA, Kan. – Henderson Engineers announces Barry Sutherland as the firm’s director of client relationships. In his newly-created position, Sutherland will focus on strengthening relationships with clients across practices companywide and in markets from coast to coast. He will develop an enhanced client management strategy to maximize the Henderson client experience for both Henderson Engineers and Henderson Building Solutions.

“Barry is a major addition to our team here at Henderson and will allow us to take our client relations to a new level,” Henderson President and CEO Rich Smith said. “His proven track record of business development success uniquely positions us to be the leading strategic partner with clients throughout our industry. He’ll identify ways we can enhance our client service and pursue work collaboratively with partners.”

“I’m thrilled to join Henderson, a firm I’ve admired for many years,” Sutherland noted. “I’m looking forward to ensuring our client relationships are top notch and can’t wait to connect with so many valued partners across the industry.”

Sutherland comes to Henderson with more than a decade of experience in the AEC industry. He spent the past nearly nine years with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. In 2013, he was promoted to director of business development and tasked with opening the Kansas City office for the 18th-largest commercial construction firm in the United States. He contributed his business development efforts in conjunction with the rest of the team to generate $450 million in sales and a growth in staff to 50 full-time employees.

From 2010-13, Sutherland excelled as a marketing and business development coordinator for McCarthy in his hometown of St. Louis. He was responsible for all marketing efforts for the science and technology business unit of McCarthy’s central region, which averaged more than $100 million annually.

Sutherland cut his teeth in the industry as a marketing coordinator for HOK in St. Louis from 2008-10, effectively promoting architectural services. In joining Henderson, he’s now seen the AEC industry from all angles, giving him a unique perspective in setting strategy for client service.

In 2003, Sutherland graduated from Culver-Stockton College where he was a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the national communications honor society. He has served on the board of the Kansas City Area Healthcare Engineers (KCAHE) and Sunflower House since 2016. He has also been active in leadership roles for the Society of Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) chapters in Kansas City and St. Louis, as well as the Kansas City chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). A resident of Olathe, Kansas, Sutherland serves on the Olathe Chamber of Commerce board, Olathe Planning Commission, and Olathe Board of Zoning Appeals.
