Marana Aquatic & Recreation Center – Town of Marana
Community recreation centers have the power to bring people together by supporting healthier lifestyles and creating spaces where residents can connect year-round. The Marana Aquatic & Recreation Center (MARC) in Marana, AZ, was designed as a vibrant community hub that brings recreation, wellness, and gathering opportunities together under one roof.
The facility offers a diverse mix of amenities to serve residents of all ages and interests, including a 25-yard competition pool, indoor gymnasium, basketball and volleyball courts, pickleball courts, weight training and cardio fitness areas, group exercise rooms, and flexible meeting spaces. Welcoming lobby and gathering areas create additional opportunities for community connection and programs.
Henderson Engineers provided comprehensive engineering services for the project, including acoustics, energy modeling, electrical, fire and life safety, plumbing, security, telecommunications, and daylight analysis. The integrated approach helped create a facility that balances fun, performance, safety, and long-term operational efficiency.
A unique feature of the project includes a dedicated outdoor air system that supports healthy indoor air quality while improving energy efficiency, an important design element for a high-use rec center. Thoughtful systems selection and coordination help support durability, maintainability, and adaptability as the needs of the Marana community grow and evolve.
For civic leaders and community decision-makers, MARC demonstrates how thoughtful facility planning and engineering can help maximize the value of a public investment. By creating a flexible, high-performing environment for recreation and community connection, the project gives Marana residents a space they can escape the Arizona heat for years to come.
