JMA Wireless Dome Renovation – Syracuse University

Syracuse University’s JMA Wireless Dome serves two major sports programs, but the football and basketball programs use the venue in very different ways. The renovation introduced a new roof structure and sound system, creating an opportunity to improve the venue experience while solving a unique challenge: designing audio systems that could support both a full capacity football configuration and a reduced seating layout for basketball.

Henderson Engineers, through HNY Consulting Engineers, provided acoustics and audio-visual engineering services for the project, with a focus on noise control and the seating bowl sound system. Our team worked with university and project stakeholders to develop an approach that could adapt to the Dome’s changing configurations while maintaining consistent audio performance.

The new roof combines a traditional structure with a cable suspended fabric system, adding complexity to the design and placement of sound equipment above the seating bowl. Our team designed an independent sound system for basketball that can operate alongside the full capacity system, giving the university greater flexibility for events that use different portions of the venue.

That approach supports more than just sporting events. It helps the JMA Wireless Dome deliver the right experience for each event without treating every configuration the same. The acoustics and audio-visual systems work with the venue’s architecture and changing layouts to support clear communication, game presentation, and the fan experience. By integrating acoustics, noise control, and audio-visual engineering into the renovation, Team Henderson helped Syracuse University create a more adaptable and high performing venue for its athletics programs and the broader campus community.
