Henderson Engineers is providing mechanical, electrical, and fire alarm design services for this 150,000 SF, 16,000-seat arena which is seeking LEED Gold certification. Assembly Hall opened in 1963 and is used by the University of Illinois for men’s and women’s basketball games, as well as concerts and theatre performances. The arena is an historical landmark and its distinctive look makes it an iconic and easily recognized building. The arena, as it exists today, has heating and ventilation but no air conditioning. Part of the $169.5 million renovation is to add new mechanical units providing air conditioning for the building. The renovation includes a new electrical system to support all portions of the building. The building will utilize a fully-integrated smoke control system for the arena and bowl that will allow for the use of pyrotechnics during shows. Key components include: arena bowl and concourse improvements; club; suites; concessions; restrooms; and office areas.
