Neighborhood Ministries’ purpose is to be a great place for urban mission opportunities for individuals, churches, and other groups. Demonstrating an ideal prototype for sustainable design and positive community impact, this long-abandoned silo building in Phoenix was transformed into a classroom building and playground. By integrating mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire systems designs, Henderson Engineers’ experience with adaptive reuse made us the ideal partner for the project owner.

This space now provides business training on site including a custom bike building and maintenance facility, a t-shirt and printmaking business, an urban farm, parenting classes for teens, job training, a thrift store, and a preschool and aftercare program. The project also houses an after-school program for teens and provides preschool and infant care for low income families. The playground was an important component for the preschool and toddler education program and provides a safe place of refuge in the city for young children to experience the natural world.
