Ten percent of the United States’ carbon emissions stem from the healthcare system, prompting healthcare providers to increasingly consider ways to reduce their carbon footprints. Electrification is often an attractive option. Electrification is the sole use of electricity instead of fossil fuels like natural gas and coal to power vital functions like heating and cooling. Projects like the all-electric Prosser Memorial Health Hospital in Prosser, Wash., which was engineered by Henderson Engineers, are leading the charge. However, there are myths related to costs, ease of facility operation, and the dirtiness of the electric power grid that may dissuade some from viewing electrification as a viable option. Henderson colleagues Mark Chrisman, health sector executive, Joe Levin, senior project manager, and Brian Alessi, sustainability director, address these misconceptions in an article published in the September/October 2025 issue of Medical Construction & Design magazine.
