Henderson Lead Engineer Receives ASPE Plumbing Award; Appointed to Board of Directors

At the annual American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) national convention, Henderson Lead Engineer and Plumbing Technical Leader Christoph Lohr was presented the Kenneth G. Wentink Award of Excellence. Lohr was selected for the biennial honor after “having worked unselfishly for and on behalf of the society with little fanfare and often with minimal visibility to the leaders and members of the society.”

“I’m honored to receive this award and give credit to my Henderson teammates, as this would not be possible without their mentoring, expertise, and forward—thinking mentalities,” Lohr said. “Our plumbing expertise is having a massive impact on the industry. The way we have been designing plumbing systems for years is now pushing the envelope. As we continue to write articles, present, and discuss our expertise, the standard is raising. We truly are the firm that is changing the plumbing industry.”

In addition to his award, Lohr joined the ASPE Board of Directors as he was appointed the ASPE Young Professionals (AYP) liaison. He will represent all ASPE members ages 35 and younger on the board, effective immediately.

Lohr’s role is a non—voting position that is involved in discussions and will communicate all feedback from the age range he is representing. At the upcoming ASPE Technical Symposium in Pittsburgh, Lohr will be highly involved in the planning of the AYP Leadership Academy.

“I’m incredibly humbled by the responsibility and trust placed in me to be the voice for all AYP members of ASPE,” Lohr noted. “I am thankful for the opportunity that President Carol Johnson and all the incoming board members have provided me and look forward to working with the group to improve ASPE as a whole. I also look forward to the many future conversations I will have with fellow AYP members and then relaying that information to the board. My predecessors, Cory Powers and Blair Minyard, did a great job in building an incredible young group of energized individuals. I definitely stand on the shoulders of giants and am excited about the opportunity to represent Henderson Engineers and all young professionals in helping the AYP take the next step in building a better ASPE.”

Over the last year, Lohr instituted a “year of legionella” for the Phoenix ASPE chapter that included six meetings on risk management of Legionnaires’ disease, which is responsible for about 60 percent of reported drinking water—related disease outbreaks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Lohr arranged speakers from various professions – including manufacturers, water management program providers, a professor, and a lawyer – that led to the professional growth of the chapter members. He also organized a five—hour seminar on laboratory gases in Henderson’s Phoenix office that sold out quickly to 30 industry professionals.

Additionally, Lohr instituted and led training for a CPD (Certified in Plumbing Design) training class for fellow chapter members. He led all six sessions that were attended by 16 plumbing specialists in reviewing the questions and ensuring the study guide was accurate. The class played an integral part in the chapter’s 50 percent growth from 2017 to 2018.

He also assembled a panel for a Hunter’s Curve water flow presentation to highlight work of the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) task group so that more curves can be implemented in other industries, including healthcare, hospitality, and education.

Throughout the past 12 months, Lohr has presented at the Legionella Conference in Baltimore, the ASPE Convention and Expo in Atlanta, and on multiple occasions at Arizona State University.

For the ASPE society, Lohr was the AYP Region 4 liaison and helped facilitate the flow of information for 12 chapters in the west region, which includes seven states and British Columbia in Canada.

Lohr noted the mentorship he has received at Henderson playing a crucial role in his development and ascent to becoming an industry leader.

“From the moment I started my time here, so many people have had a drastic impact on my career,” he explained. “The ownership group has always instilled positivity in me and continued to provide the next opportunity and challenge. Growth comes easy with belief, and I’m so thankful for our leadership team constantly inspiring me and supporting my development.”

Christoph Lohr is an example of Henderson’s commitment to creating environments where people can reach their full potential. From investing in industry—leading research, to hundreds of engineer—led technical courses for our employees and clients, to an entire department dedicated to quality control, Henderson works differently to help our employees and clients thrive.
