The Lenexa Civic Center is a centerpiece for the city of Lenexa and includes a 3-story recreational center, a 4-story city hall building, a 5-story parking garage, and 48,500 SF of exterior plaza space that’s open to the public for various gathering opportunities.

Cooling for the campus is supplied by a central plant with chillers and pumps located in the lowest level of the city hall building, and cooling towers located on the top level of the parking garage. Chilled water piping between buildings is routed through a below-grade tunnel. Heating within the rec center and city hall buildings is provided by separate boiler plants located in each building. Variable air volume units were used throughout the space to distribute the air and a microprocessor-based direct digital control system was utilized.

Low-flow plumbing fixtures with automatic sensors were utilized throughout the campus. Provisions for future photo-voltaic panels, as well as integrated lighting controls, were also provided. The natatorium is served by dedicated dehumidification units and air distribution is provided through specific strategies to maintain good indoor air quality and comfort. This project was designed for and achieved LEED Silver certification.
