Henderson Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services for this project that was designed to meet LEED® Silver criteria. The project included 20,000 SF of shell retail space for future tenants, an approximately 30,000 SF building finished out for the University Bookstore, and a parking garage for 1,500 vehicles.
Henderson developed the lighting design for the University of Arkansas Bookstore and parking garage. Services for the bookstore included retail lighting design strategies catered specifically for the bookstore branding and envisioned demographic and assistance with “Master Planning” of the design to provide a lighting solution which is in concert with the architecture and retail goals. The design desires will be balanced with the pragmatic needs including code requirements, LEED compliance and the bookstore’s logistical and maintenance concerns.
Design services for the parking garage included development of lighting design criteria, lighting systems payback comparisons, electric and daylighting calculations, daylight harvesting and lighting controls design. Various garage lighting design needs were carefully reviewed and considered throughout the design process, including campus lighting standards, local codes, outdoor lighting ordinances, industry standards, architectural design opportunities, future facility maintenance and sustainability. The design solutions included LED fixtures for outdoor general lighting and recent advancements that have enabled the application of fluorescent lighting for garage deck lighting in this less than temperate geographical location.
Henderson has also worked closely with the design and construction cost estimating teams to review lighting costs and adjust the design to respond to budget requirements where possible throughout the project. Engineering services have included egress and emergency code coordination and design, emergency lighting calculations and energy use calculations to support both local energy code and LEED documentation requirements.
