As partners for more than 20 years, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission knew Henderson Engineers had the expertise they needed in both education and healthcare to design the new B.E. Smith Family Center. A facility for children with special needs and their families, the B.E. Smith Family Center offers tailored services such as music therapy, aquatic rehab, and peer modeling.

Knowing our building systems would greatly impact the way children would react to therapy in the space, Henderson paid special attention to the details.

The acoustical design of this space was very involved, particularly at the Therapy Pool - our team was tasked to design “the quietest indoor pool possible.” We worked closely with our architectural partner on room volume, shaping, and material selection; with our mechanical team on achieving a very low NC rating from mechanical/ventilation system operation; and the aquatics consultant for the facility on the pool's filtration system and layout.

We designed a specialized heating and cooling system that provides individuals with control over the temperature in their part of the building as needed. LED lights with dimmable zones with the ability to be adjusted for different learning settings and times of day were also incorporated  — helping to provide a calming environment that avoids triggers and distractions.
