Kennedy Elementary is unique in that it combines a K-5 school with early childhood education, fostering students’ creativity and critical thinking skills in a collaborative learning space.

Henderson Engineers completed the building systems design for the renovation and new addition with project-based learning features to encourage student collaboration. In addition, our team helped the school hit significant energy goals including a target of 30% better than ASHRAE 90.1 2004. In addition to upgrading the school’s water service and fire and life safety systems, the mechanical system retrofit used an efficient variable refrigerant (VRF) system with dedicated outside air distribution, providing fresh air to help the students remain focused and energized throughout the day.

Wireless access points with power-only docking stations for mobile cart mounted audio-video equipment were used in the learning spaces. The renovation incorporated increased floor and perimeter mounted power, data, and audio-video, in order to provide flexibility for teachers and students. LED overhead lights were used to provide a long-life and low-maintenance solution in classrooms. Occupancy-based lighting controls with integral daylight harvesting are provided to take advantage of natural light in the classroom and increased flexibility.
