Henderson Engineers provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design and consulting services for this multi-year IDIQ for NASA’s Dryden Research Center. Typical projects included the design and preparation of construction drawings and specifications for buildings to include schematic design, pre-construction documents studies, design development, cost estimates, value engineering, specialty consulting, constructability reviews, facility assessments, and commercial office building design. Sample task orders are below:

Revitalization of Mission Control Infrastructure
The revitalization and renovation of three different buildings that combined for an estimated 150,000 SF and total construction budget of $8.5 million. The oldest building was over 55 years old. Project purpose was to upgrade the entire facility to make it more energy efficient. Two new chillers were installed in the central plant and an optimization program was implemented for the infrastructure controls.

Research Aircraft Integration Facility
The upgrade and repair of a 150,000 SF, two-story building. Henderson redesigned the building’s heating and cooling system to improve its efficiency and reliability. Additionally, a partial renovation of the electrical system was completed with an additional upgrade of the lighting systems. Total construction budget was $7 million.

Airborne Science Lab Remodel
An upgrade and repair of the 25,000 SF Airborne Science Lab. Total construction budget was $500,000. New finishes and demolition work was completed. A refurbishment of the HVAC systems was conducted and the power supply was upgraded. Fire protection upgrades included notification system, fume hood, and sprinkler redesign.

Vehicle and Ground Equipment Maintenance Facility
Concept study conducted in order to give ownership the required information in order to issue a request for qualifications, and eventually a request for proposal. Additionally, Henderson provided a programming booklet with their deliverables. The building will ultimately be a net zero facility with an $8.7 million construction budget.

Flight Loads Laboratory
Design services for this project included providing power for the new mechanical systems utilizing the existing substation, motor control centers, and distribution equipment. The existing LED lights in the mechanical rooms were also part of the scope.
