The goal of the Health Education Building at the University of Kansas Medical Center is to foster a modern learning environment that teaches and reaches more medical students in Kansas – a state facing a concerning shortage of health care workers. The building has a modern interior inspired by the building’s key tenets – connectivity, transparency, and a healthy, sustainable environment.

Our team combined proven design methods with innovative approaches that accentuate the progressive learning environment. We maximized energy savings with the existing campus system by incorporating on-demand ventilation, energy recovery wheels, and distributed air handling units that minimize fan energy. In addition, our lighting designs played a key role in accenting the building for maximum impact at night. In fact, their lighting design received the International Association of Lighting Designers' 2019 Award of Merit.

The Health Education Building is the main facility for the KU Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Professionals. The iconic building’s state-of-the-art learning spaces and simulation lab are a model for new ways to teach and reach the nurses and doctors of tomorrow.
