Six Henderson Projects Receive ENR Awards Across the Country

Engineering News Record (ENR) magazine has granted regional Best Project honors and Awards of Merit to six developments with building systems designed by Henderson Engineers. The leading industry publication grants the annual awards as part of its efforts to honor the best construction projects nationwide in a variety of building categories. Award recipients are chosen according to the following criteria:

          • Construction Quality and Craftsmanship
          • Functionality of Design and Aesthetic Quality
          • Innovation and Contribution to the Industry/Community
          • Overcoming Challenges and Teamwork
          • Safety

The 2021 Best Project and Award of Merit winners with contributions from Henderson are listed below under their respective regions as categorized by ENR.

 

California Region

Residential/Hospitality, Award of Merit

A four-acre, $57 million shipping container development in downtown LA that provides 232 temporary and permanent housing units for the local homeless population. The project was fully completed in less than five months using modular construction methods.

 

Southwest Region

Government/Public Building, Award of Merit

A $9 million expansion that added more than 14,000 square feet of space to the local police headquarters, including a modernized evidence room with capacity to hold more than 65,000 evidence items.

Higher Education/Research, Best Project

Spanning 227,000 square feet across seven floors, this state-of-the-art building is the newest addition to the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, a bioscience and medical research development spanning 30 acres. Tenants include Arizona State University, which houses biomedical research laboratories, an innovation center, and a translational research center within the establishment.

Landscape/Urban Development, Best Project

This five-acre memorial honors World War II servicemembers who were on board the USS Arizona when it sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The configuration of the gardens follows the exact layout of the ship and includes more than 1,500 columns representing each person aboard the vessel.

 

Texas & Louisiana Region

Sports/Entertainment, Award of Merit

A 200,000 square-foot exhibit hall, 45,000 square feet of meeting space, and a 30,000 square-foot ballroom are highlights of this $288 million publicly funded development. The project, which replaced an aging convention center, is aimed at being an economic engine for the city through event revenue and job creation.

Sports/Entertainment, Award of Merit

A $260 million venue that is home to Major League Soccer’s Austin FC. In addition to a variety of recreational amenities, the 20,500-capacity stadium sports the second largest roof canopy in the MLS to help keep fans protected from the elements. Whole Building Life Cycle Analysis (WBLCA) was used to ensure the building is as environmentally friendly as possible – a first in the MLS.
