Ballpark Digest Names American Family Fields of Phoenix its Ballpark Renovation of the Year

In its annual baseball season-end awards program, Ballpark Digest named the American Family Fields of Phoenix its Ballpark Renovation of the Year. The extensive renovations and improved training conditions at the spring training home of the Milwaukee Brewers has earned praise far and wide following its first season.

Henderson Engineers completed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire and life safety services for the complex along with the design team of HKS Architects, Mortenson, and the International Facilities Group.

“Having been part of hundreds of projects during my 14-year career with Henderson, American Family Fields has been one of my favorites to be involved with,” said Kelly Hyde, venue practice leader and associate at Henderson. “Knowing the challenge that this project would be early on made for an exciting design as it evolved. Watching the facility transform from an aged, antiquated complex to what has truly become a world-class, fan-friendly establishment has been incredible.

“From day one, the goal for this facility was about bringing the community together in a great venue through one of America’s favorite pastimes. That approach never wavered along the way, and it shows. Ultimately, this project took a tremendous amount of pride and dedication from many people, including a team of some of the most talented engineers, architects, and contractors in the industry.”

Ballpark Digest publisher Kevin Reichard added, “The old Maryvale Baseball Park was a very limited facility, both for fans and for players. With the renovations, Brewers players now can prep for the season in a state-of-the-art facility, and fans can enjoy plenty of access to player workouts and the watch a spring-training game in comfort.”

For the facility that originally opened in 1998, an accelerated 10-month construction and renovation was scheduled when the Brewers opted to remain in Phoenix. The renovations included tearing down the Minor League clubhouse that was separated from the big-league club and eliminating some parking to construct a new, large building with a new practice field and agility field with access for both MLB and MiLB players and staff members. The new facility houses business operations and player development personnel.

The main parking lot was altered to encourage more interaction as fans enter the park from their cars. Inside, an expanded entry behind home plate opens the park to the community and fans enjoy amenities such as upgraded concessions, theater-style seats, and an expanded team store.

Game day is more than a day. It’s an experience — the crowd, the food, great seats, video boards, and the thrill of the perfect play.
