COURSE OVERVIEW

This presentation explores the strategies used to design offices that demonstrate drastic reductions in energy use. We begin by examining the Department of Energy’s suggested energy conservation measures for 50% energy reduction against code—minimum structures. Though we are in support of a 50% reduction in all buildings we realize that these strategies may take a decade or more to pay back and may not be feasible for all building types. Therefore, we also examine scaled back strategies that still result in 30% reductions and often have 1 to 2 year playbacks. We call it “the new normal”.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand the key elements of the 50% design guide recommendations for maximum energy efficiency.

  2. Evaluate the cost/benefit of the key recommendations of the 50% design guide.

  3. Understand differences in applying ECMs in various climate zones and know how to implement ECM recommendations in construction.

  4. Apply low energy design concepts to the design of large office projects in the mixed/humid climate zone.
