COURSE OVERVIEW

Maintaining occupant comfort in large venues such as stadiums or arenas can be both difficult and costly, but it remains a top priority when designing and operating a venue. This presentation will discuss a new application for phase change material (PCM) that can be used for ambient cooling in stadium environments to improve overall fan comfort. We’ll discuss the research behind this idea, the potential applications, and the benefits and drawbacks of this strategy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand what phase change material is.
  2. Describe the research process used to develop this application.
  3. Discuss how passive cooling strategies can be utilized to maintain occupant comfort.
  4. Articulate the best (and worst) environments in which to implement phase change material as a cooling strategy.
