COURSE OVERVIEW

This presentation provides basic information about heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems utilized in both teaching and research laboratories. We will discuss risk assessment and how to protect occupants from exposure to laboratory hazards. In examining a variety of design considerations, fume hoods, HVAC systems, and plumbing systems will be covered as well as how to determine proper airflow rates.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe types of laboratory hazards and their mitigation when planning for a new or renovated building.
  2. Understand the concept of primary and secondary containment and how laboratory design should apply both.
  3. Identify when fume hoods are needed and how they should be located and applied.
  4. Articulate the basic requirements for and application of emergency plumbing fixtures.
